Buddy's Radio Bio

Buddy started in radio at the age of 17 with WDYK, Cumberland Maryland. Buddy McGregor 1949He latched onto the TOP 40 concept with Gordon McLendon at KILT in Houston Texas in 1957. Along with some excellent talent he was part of the machine that built the Top 40 format into a national phenomenon. Many remember his antics at KXOK St. Louis in 1959. Sitting on a flagpole at KLIF in Dallas and as a top jock along with people like Jack Gale and Buddy Deane at WITH in Baltimore in the 1960s.
In 1965 he returned to Houston to join KNUZ.
The station sent Buddy to England to interview the Beatles at theBuddyMcGregor with the Beatles height of their popularity. Against all odds Buddy managed to make his way onto the estate of Lord and Lady Astor where the filming of the Beatles feature, "HELP" was underway. Despite the Beatles not accepting interviews at that time Buddy was mistaken as a personal friend of Paul's from America and he was welcomed onto the grounds and was able to witness the filming of a few scenes, and was granted a brief sit down with the group. Of the 17 minute interview, 11 minutes of it were unusable due the the groups well know marijuana indulgence. The quartet giggled through much of this casual conversation which is full of cleaver quips and puns that they were known for. The meeting was casual but the result is an interesting bit of Beatle history. This interview helped earn Buddy the Radio Mirror's "DJ of the Year" award for 1965. A full CD version of this interview will be available, complete with all the giggles of the Fab 4 "under the influence". A true colloector's item.
See the link below to hear portions of the interview.
Retiring from radio in 1971 Buddy went into advertising in Houston. He reprised his career in 1980 with an evening program called "The Time Machine" playing the music that by then was called the "OLDIES".
Buddy returned to radio as the owner of three radio stations in the Austin Texas market between 1993 and 2005.
Buddy now lives in Austin Texas where he is retired but staying busy collecting the memorabilia from his fellow jocks of those early broadcast years that make up this website.
